If you think that there are specific tests, exams, and procedures for how to diagnose bronchitis, then you are wrong. In fact, doctors don’t diagnose bronchitis the same way every single time. Usually, they rely on several factors to decide whether or not the patient has bronchitis—it is more guesswork than anything else!
How Is Bronchitis Diagnosed? The Two Components
There are two main components that make up how bronchitis is diagnosed. First, your doctor will check your medical history. Many times, knowing about conditions you have been recently diagnosed with (such as a heart condition) or conditions that run in your family (such as an immune system deficiency) can play a major role in how bronchitis is diagnosed.
The other part of the diagnosis process for bronchitis is a physical examination. Your doctor will most likely perform one of these to discover if you have any other related health problems. The physical examination will also assist in the process of elimination—it will be able to tell your doctor whether or not you have a more serious disease, such as pneumonia.
Based on these two factors, your doctor will usually be able to determine whether or not you have bronchitis. Then you can move onto the next step—the treatment!
Treating The Cause Using Tests And Exams
In order to treat bronchitis, your doctor will need to diagnosis the cause behind the condition. Usually, if the cause is believed to be viral, then no more testing is needed. However, if your doctor believes that the cause of your bronchitis is bacterial, he or she will usually perform more tests.
There are two tests or examinations that are typically performed on people who have or are suspected to have bronchitis. The first is a chest x-ray. People who have acute bronchitis usually produce a normal chest x-ray. Another common test is a gram stain or culture of the mucus from your lungs. This will help the doctor to determine whether your acute bronchitis is bacteria-related.
Other tests that are less common might be performed if your bronchitis progresses into chronic bronchitis or leads to more complications. However, these tests are usually only needed in extreme cases of bronchitis.
